THCP: What is it?

Tetrahydrocannabiphorol, or THCP for short, is also known scientifically as (-)-Trans-9-tetrahydrocannabiphorol. It is a naturally occurring cannabinoid and analogue of THC found in different cannabis strains. It is believed to be 33 times more potent than THC at cannabinoid 1 (CB1) receptors.

THCP is an organic cannabinoid (or phytocannabinoid) that resembles delta 9 THC, the cannabinoid that is most prevalent in the majority of marijuana strains. THCP can be produced in a laboratory by chemically modifying CBD that has been taken from legal hemp plants, despite being first discovered in a specific marijuana strain.

In actuality, there isn’t enough THCP in genuine cannabis flower to be economically extracted, so in order to generate any THCP with any real commercial worth, it must be made in a laboratory.

The chemical makeup of THCP differs greatly from that of delta 9. It has a longer alkyl side chain, which is the group of atoms that protrudes from the bottom of the molecule’s biggest portion. Since THCP has a larger side chain—seven carbon atoms as opposed to five in delta 9—it can attach to human CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors more easily, which suggests that its effects on the body and brain will likely be stronger.

Almost all of the information we have about THCP comes from a 2019 study conducted by a team of Italian academics that made the compound well known. Since there hasn’t been any research on human subjects, we don’t know much about potential safety concerns or side effects associated with THCP other than what we may infer from the effects of other forms of THC.
